As you may or may not know, I’ve been a-booktube’n for about six months now (with minor success… mostly because I’m still learning the ropes). However, I finally got around to doing what is known as the “BookTube Newbie Tag,” created by Brenda C., I believe? I came across it via other booktubers, and upon googling it my primary source of information was a blogger named Shauna Philip. So it’s one of those community things, I suppose!
Of course, here’s the video:
But also, here’s a “transcript” of the questions and answers in case I’m just too awkward to bear… bare…? Bear…
1. Why did you start this channel?
Well, because I wanted to talk about books, duh! But also probably because my fiancé was tired of my book (and movie, and TV show) related rants. I don’t say this in the video, but he’s actually the one who first suggested I should start this channel. Maybe it’s because it’s his camera equipment and he’s super into it… but I’m sure that is only marginally related…
2. What are some fun and unique things you can bring to YouTube?
PFFFFFFFT…
Well, I hope it would be my charming awkwardness, but only time will tell. Mostly, I’m hoping that my writer’s perspective and my love of all forms of storytelling media–movies and TV shows and the like–will result in some interesting things to say. But only time will tell.
3. What are you most excited about for your channel?
I think the number one thing that I’m excited for is finding my rhythm. I’m really hoping that the Beer and Books series is part of that but I’m also eager to see what else is in store!
I’m also excited to interact more with the community! I’ve already found some really great small and big booktubers and I’m always on the lookout for more!
4. Why do you love reading?
Oh jeez, that’s like asking why you love food…
But really, I’ve always been a big sucker for good characters, ones that you can connect with even though they’re fictional. It’s an art form, man!
I also can’t deny the power of a well-built fictional world. When an author has put so much thought into the world that you can suspend your disbelief and enter into it, that’s pretty darn cool.
5. What book series got you into reading?
I want to say Artemis Fowl. I absolutely loved that series and it really opened my eyes to just how cool the sci-fi/fantasy genre could be. In many ways, it’s still the series to beat.
6. What questions would you ask your favorite booktubers?
- How do you find the time to read???
- What are your most unpopular/controversial book opinions?
7. What challenges will be the hardest with booktube?
Oh, I can answer this one from experience: one challenge is definitely keeping to a schedule.
But I think the number one challenge is not looking at the numbers and not caring what people think.
As someone who is heinously small when it comes to BookTube, I can definitely vouch for the fact that if you want to keep going, you CANNOT focus on the numbers game. Take the stats, learn from them, but don’t let them consume you.
8. When did you start reading?
Technically? Probably like five. But if we’re talking chapter books and actual comprehension, probably around the second or third grade.
9. Where do you read?
Usually? On my living room futon. But back when it was available, at the library, and if I feel like it, on my parents’ back porch.
Bonus: one of my biggest house-related dreams is to have a cute little reading nook!
10. What kinds of books do you read?
Most of the time, YA sci-fi/fantasy, but not hard sci-fi or fantasy… I prefer a blend of genres. I also occasionally enjoy the classics and love anything with good romance. Fairytale retellings also have a special place in my heart!
So that’s the BookTube newbie tag! If you have a BookTube channel, uh, drop it in the comments please? I’d love to support you!

Hello and welcome to booktube!!! Thanks for stopping by, excited to see your booktube newbie tag! 🙂
I’ve come to this site a few times to look up advice and questions for BookTubers like myself. I’m a novice BookTuber, but if you would like to check out my channel, it’s: http://www.YouTube.com/ErinRogoff
I have a plethora of BookTube videos and I would be psyched if you would check it out! Any advice you have for me?
That’s so awesome! My advice is pretty general, but it’s the best I’ve got: make videos that YOU enjoy making and just have fun with it! 🙂
